A winter baby means cozy newborn days indoors, holiday visitors, and a few extra questions: How do I keep the baby warm at night? What should they wear in the car seat? What do I need for cold and flu season?
This checklist covers the winter-specific items worth adding to your registry, along with the safety basics that matter most in cold weather. It's designed to sit alongside our main baby registry checklist, which covers the year-round essentials. Prices are approximate and change often.
Safe, Warm Sleep
Keeping a baby warm at night is the most common winter worry, and the safest answer is simple. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the NIH's Safe to Sleep campaign recommend placing babies on their backs on a firm, flat surface with nothing else in the sleep space: no blankets, pillows, bumpers or soft toys.
So instead of blankets, dress the baby in layers and use a wearable blanket.

Wearable swaddle

Snug arms for the newborn weeks. Stop swaddling once baby shows signs of trying to roll.
- 2–3 wearable blankets or sleep sacks in a warmer weight (look at the TOG or fabric rating). Sleep sack: Buy now at Amazon
- 2–3 swaddles for the early weeks. Swaddle blanket: Buy now at Amazon
- Fitted crib sheets, at least two, so one can be in the wash. Crib sheets: Buy now at Amazon
- A waterproof mattress protector that fits snugly. Waterproof crib mattress protector: Buy now at Amazon
- A white noise machine to soften holiday house noise. Sound machine: Buy now at Amazon
- Blackout curtains for short winter days and early sunsets. Blackout curtains: Buy now at Amazon
What to avoid: weighted sleep sacks or weighted swaddles (the AAP advises against them), crib bumpers, quilts and loose blankets, and hats during sleep indoors. Babies release heat through their heads, and overheating is a risk factor in sleep. A room that feels comfortable for a lightly dressed adult is usually about right.
A cool-mist humidifier is a common addition in dry winter homes. If you register for one, choose cool mist rather than warm, keep it out of reach, and clean it as the manufacturer directs.

Warm Clothing (Newborn and 0–3 Months)
Winter babies need more layers, but not more clothes overall. Many parents find a few warm, easy pieces get worn on repeat.
- 6–8 zip-front footed sleepers. Zips are faster than snaps at 3 a.m. Zip-front cotton footed sleepers: Buy now at Amazon
- 6–8 long-sleeve bodysuits for layering.
- Baby mittens, to keep hands warm outdoors and stop scratches. Baby mittens: Buy now at Amazon
- 2–3 warm hats for outdoors only.
- Socks or booties that stay on.
- A thin fleece jacket or snug-fitting fleece layer, for the car seat (see below).
- A warm wearable outer layer (bunting or pram suit) for walks in the stroller or carrier, not for the car seat.
A simple rule of thumb many pediatricians share: dress the baby in one more layer than you are wearing.
Cold-Weather Car Seat Safety
This is the most important winter safety point on the list. The AAP advises no bulky coats or snowsuits under a car seat harness. Puffy layers compress in a crash, which can leave the harness too loose. The AAP's winter car seat safety tips explain how to keep the baby warm safely:
Dress the baby in thin, snug layers, such as a fleece jacket over a sleeper.
Buckle and tighten the harness first, then lay a blanket or coat over the top of the harness.
Keep the car seat carrier inside the house so it isn't cold to start with.
Avoid aftermarket inserts, bunting bags or padded covers that go behind or under the baby or the harness unless they came with the seat.
A cover that goes only over the top of the seat (like a shower cap) and doesn't interfere with the harness is a common choice. Check your car seat manual.
An infant car seat. Check the fit for your car, and book a check with a certified car seat technician if you can. Infant car seat: Buy now at Amazon

Cold and Flu Season Basics
Winter babies arrive during cold and flu season, so a small care kit is worth registering for. Always call your pediatrician with questions about a fever or illness in a young baby.
- A baby digital thermometer. The AAP explains how to take a child's temperature by age. Baby digital thermometer: Buy now at Amazon
- A nasal aspirator for stuffy noses. Nasal aspirator: Buy now at Amazon
- A baby first aid kit. Baby first aid kit: Buy now at Amazon
- A baby grooming kit with nail clippers and a soft brush. Baby grooming kit: Buy now at Amazon
- Hand soap and sanitizer by the door for visitors.
Visitors in winter: it's okay to ask guests to wash hands, stay home if they're unwell, and keep visits short. Ask your provider which vaccines family members and caregivers should be up to date on before meeting the baby.
Winter Bath Time and Skin Care
- Hooded towels to keep baby warm right out of the bath. Hooded towels: Buy now at Amazon
- A baby bathtub that fits your sink or tub. Baby bathtub: Buy now at Amazon
- A diaper cream for the changing station. Dry winter air can leave skin feeling more sensitive. Diaper cream: Buy now at Amazon
Getting Out (Gently) in Winter

Baby carrier
Infantino Flip 4-in-1 baby carrier

Easier than a stroller on icy sidewalks. Keep baby's face visible and uncovered by coats or blankets.
- A soft baby carrier. Wear a big coat around both of you rather than putting a bulky layer on the baby.
- A stroller organizer for gloves, phone and a warm drink. Stroller organizer: Buy now at Amazon
- Car window shades for low winter sun. Car window shades: Buy now at Amazon
