Baby stores make it look like a newborn needs a room full of gear. In reality, a new baby needs a safe place to sleep, a way to eat, clean diapers, a car seat and a lot of cuddles. Most of the rest is optional.

This minimalist registry lists 35 things that cover the first few months well, grouped by category. It works for small homes, tighter budgets, or anyone who would rather wait and buy only what they find they need. For a fuller list, see our baby registry checklist for first-time parents.

The Minimalist Rule of Thumb

Before adding anything, ask three questions:

  1. Will we use it in the first three months? If not, it can wait.
  2. Does it do a job nothing else does? Many gadgets duplicate simple tools.
  3. Can we borrow it? Bouncers, baby baths and newborn clothes are often outgrown quickly and easy to borrow.

One exception: buy car seats and cribs or bassinets new, or from someone you know and trust, so you know their history and that they meet current safety standards.

Sleep (6 items)

The AAP's safe sleep guidance is simple: baby sleeps on their back, on a firm, flat surface, with nothing else in the sleep space, ideally in the parents' room for at least the first six months. See HealthyChildren.org on safe sleep. That makes a minimalist sleep setup the safest one.

  1. A bassinet or crib with a firm, flat mattress that meets current safety standards Bedside bassinet: Buy now at Amazon
  2. Two or three fitted crib or bassinet sheets Crib sheets: Buy now at Amazon
  3. A waterproof mattress protector Waterproof crib mattress protector: Buy now at Amazon
  4. Two or three swaddles for the newborn weeks (stop swaddling once baby shows signs of rolling) Swaddle blanket: Buy now at Amazon
  5. One or two wearable sleep sacks instead of loose blankets Sleep sack: Buy now at Amazon
  6. A white noise machine (optional but much loved) Sound machine: Buy now at Amazon

Feeding (6 items)

Whether you breastfeed, formula feed or both, keep the list short and add once you know what works.

  1. A starter bottle set in one style, so you can see what baby likes before buying more Bottle starter set: Buy now at Amazon
  2. A bottle drying rack or a clean towel spot Bottle drying rack: Buy now at Amazon
  3. Six to eight burp cloths Burp cloths: Buy now at Amazon
  4. A nursing pillow (helpful for any feeding method) Nursing pillow: Buy now at Amazon
  5. A manual breast pump if you plan to breastfeed and want occasional bottles Manual breast pump: Buy now at Amazon
  6. Nipple cream and reusable nursing pads if breastfeeding Nipple cream: Buy now at Amazon

Insurance often covers a breast pump, so check your plan before registering for an electric one.

Diapering (6 items)

  1. Newborn and size 1 diapers (do not stock up too far in one size) Size 1 diapers: Buy now at Amazon
  2. Wipes Wipes: Buy now at Amazon
  3. Diaper cream Diaper cream: Buy now at Amazon
  4. A changing pad for a dresser top or the floor Diaper changing pad: Buy now at Amazon
  5. Two changing pad covers Changing pad cover: Buy now at Amazon
  6. A portable changing mat for the diaper bag Portable changing mat: Buy now at Amazon

A dedicated changing table is optional. A dresser top with a secured pad, or a mat on the floor, works well.

Getting Around (4 items)

  1. A rear-facing infant car seat. This is the one item you truly need before leaving the hospital. Follow the AAP's car seat guidance and have the installation checked if you can. Infant car seat: Buy now at Amazon
  2. A stroller, ideally one that fits your car seat or folds small Compact travel stroller: Buy now at Amazon
  3. A soft baby carrier or wrap for hands-free days Baby carrier: Buy now at Amazon
  4. A diaper bag, or any backpack you already own Diaper bag backpack: Buy now at Amazon

Often used more than the stroller in the early weeks. Keep baby's face visible and airway clear.

Clothing (5 items)

Babies grow fast, and clothes are the most-gifted category. Keep your own list small.

  1. Six to eight zip-front sleepers in newborn and 0-3 month sizes Zip-front cotton footed sleepers: Buy now at Amazon
  2. Five or six bodysuits
  3. Two or three soft hats
  4. Scratch mittens Baby mittens: Buy now at Amazon
  5. One weather-appropriate outer layer that does not go under car seat straps

Bath and Care (4 items)

  1. A baby bathtub or sink insert (or bathe baby in a clean sink with support) Baby bathtub: Buy now at Amazon
  2. Two hooded towels and some washcloths Hooded towels: Buy now at Amazon
  3. A baby grooming kit with nail clippers or a file Baby grooming kit: Buy now at Amazon
  4. A gentle, fragrance-free baby wash

Health and Safety (3 items)

  1. A digital thermometer. The AAP notes a rectal reading is most accurate for young babies. Call your pediatrician right away for a fever of 100.4°F or higher in a baby under three months. Baby digital thermometer: Buy now at Amazon
  2. A nasal aspirator for stuffy noses Nasal aspirator: Buy now at Amazon
  3. A basic baby first aid kit Baby first aid kit: Buy now at Amazon

Play (1 item)

  1. A play mat for tummy time, or simply a clean blanket on the floor, plus a few board books Activity gym: Buy now at Amazon

Newborns mainly want your face and voice. A few high-contrast cards and books are plenty at first.

What You Can Skip (or Wait On)

  • Wipe warmers, bottle sterilizers and baby food makers. Nice, not needed. Hot soapy water or a dishwasher cleans most bottles.
  • Crib bumpers, positioners and pillows. The AAP advises keeping these out of the sleep space.
  • A full nursery set. A bassinet in your room covers the first months.
  • Shoes for newborns. Socks are enough.
  • A high chair, toddler gear and big toys. Add these around four to six months.
  • Inclined sleepers and nests. These are not safe for sleep.

Make Your Minimalist Registry Work for Guests

A short registry can still make guests happy:

  • Add a few items at different budgets so everyone has an option. Our registry must-haves under $50 has ideas.
  • Use a group gift fund for the car seat or stroller.
  • Ask for diapers in bigger sizes, wipes or a meal delivery instead of extra clothes.
  • Choose a registry with a good completion discount. Our Babylist vs Amazon comparison explains the options.

If you would like to keep track as you build it, our Registry and Hospital Bag Checklist Bundle is a printable list you can tick off.

Frequently asked questions

What is a minimalist baby registry?

A minimalist registry lists only the items a baby truly needs in the first few months: a safe sleep space, feeding basics, diapering supplies, a car seat, a few clothes and simple care items. Extras are added later if they prove useful.

How many items should be on a minimalist registry?

Many minimalist registries land around 30 to 50 items. Our list of 35 covers sleep, feeding, diapering, travel, clothing, bath, health and play for the newborn months.

What baby items are not worth buying?

Common skips include wipe warmers, crib bumpers, sleep positioners, newborn shoes and many single-use gadgets. Bumpers and positioners also go against AAP safe sleep advice.

What should I buy new instead of secondhand?

Buy car seats and crib or bassinet mattresses new, or from someone you trust, so you know their history. Check that cribs and bassinets meet current safety standards and have not been recalled.

Can a minimalist registry still get a completion discount?

Yes. Most registries offer a completion discount based on what you add, not how much. Adding a few planned later items, like a high chair, can help you use it.
